I'm
running various polls on my site these days for a very specific reason
- to get to know my readers better. I want the site to continue to
evolve and improve, providing the kind of info that the readers need,
and I think the best way to do that is to learn more about their
current habits. Here are the past polls, with their results:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Poll from April 2009 - How
much do reviews effect your collectibles buying decisions? Voters
could only pick one.
Responses - 691
1 - Alot - I search for product reviews in advance of buying almost
always: 27%
2 - Somewhat - I like to see what others say in advance when possible:
53%
3 - A little - I check, but it
rarely effects my own buying decision: 15%
4 - Not at all - I don't pay any attention to the reviews of others in
making my decision: 5%

Not too surprising I suppose, since this is a review site, so most
folks coming here would be interested in reviews. Still, I was a bit
surprised by the fact that 80% said they effected their buying
decisions.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Poll from May 2009 - What's
your current collecting focus? Voters could pick more than
one.
Responses - 883
1 - High End Statues: 10%
2 - High End Sixth Scale: 36%
3 - Busts/Mini Busts: 6%
4 - Prop Replicas: 5%
5 - Smaller Action Figures: 39%
6 - Designer/Vinyl: 4%

Lower cost, smaller action figures and the higher cost sixth scale
figures were neck and neck, and that seems to mirror what we are seeing
in the general market right now.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Poll from June 2009 - How
much do you spend each month on your collectibles 'habit'?
Voters could only pick one.
Responses - 592
1 - less than $50: 35%
2 - $50 - $200: 40%
3 - $200 - $500: 14%
4 - $500 - $1000: 4%
5 - more than $1000: 7%

What's
surprising to me isn't the high end. About 25% said they spend more
than $200 a month, which is not a surprise. Neither is the large number
that spend $50 - $200 a month. But what does surprise me is that the
$50 - $200 group isn't even larger, and that so many folks spend less
than $50 a month! This surprises me because I can't figure out what you
can collect in that price range. It costs $30 a month just to buy one
MOTUC figure! Then again, the economy has certainly made things much
tighter for everone, and I'm betting that the results of this poll two
years ago would have been quite a bit different.

Poll for July 2009 - Which company annoucements are you most looking forward to from the upcoming SDCC?

1 - DC Direct: 7% 2 - Hasbro: 15% 3 - Gentle Giant: 1% 4 - Mattel: 18% 5 - McFarlane: 3% 6 - Mezco: 3% 7 - NECA: 11% 8 - Sideshow/Hot Toys: 36% 9 - Other: 5%

Clearly,
the work and marketing of Sideshow and Hot Toys has really been paying
off! The next poll follows up to this, and there are some interesting
comparisons...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Poll for July 2009 - Which companies' announcements are you NOW most excited about?
Responses - 521
1 - DC Direct: 6% 2 - Hasbro: 16% 3 - Gentle Giant: 2% 4 - Mattel: 27% 5 - McFarlane: 2% 6 - Mezco: 3% 7 - NECA: 8% 8 - Sideshow/Hot Toys: 31% 9 - Other: 5%

Some
very interesting results here, when taken in context with the previous
poll. Almost every company stayed at the same level of interest except
for Sideshow/Hot Toys and Mattel. Sideshow/Hot Toys dropped from 36% to
31%, while Mattel jumped way up from 18% to 27%. While I think Sideshow
and Hot Toys had a good show, I think that Mattel really came out
strong with lots of new figures, announcements, and a generally well
publisized booth. That's how you have a good show, and that's how you
turn it into great advertising.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Poll for August 2009 - Where do you make most of your collectible purchases?
Responses - 484
1 - Online Specialty Store: 30% 2 - Ebay: 33% 3 - Online Mass Retailer: 4% 4 - Local Mass Retailer: 13% 5 - Local Comic/Specialty Store: 16% 6 - Other: 4%

This
one had fewer votes because I had to kill it early. Damn Twitpoll kept
having issues, making my home page load too slowly, so I booted the
poll off the page a week or so ahead of schedule. Still, I was shocked
at the results. I had expected the Online Specialty Store to be the big
number 1 - I know it's where I may the majority of my purchases these
days. For it to fall in second behind Ebay was a huge surprise, as I
didn't realize that many folks still depended on da bay for their
collectibles.
