Introduction
ThreeZero has been impressing me with the majority of their recent Game of Thrones sixth scale releases, with the singular exception of Cersei. In fact, their White Walker might be my figure of 2019 - haven't decided quite yet, but the Poppies voting ballot will be going up soon, and he'll be on it.
Six years ago, their very first release was Tyrion, and they are now revisiting the character with a Season 7 release. He just started
shipping, and should run you around $190 for the deluxe (which is the figure I'm reviewing tonight) or $170 for the regular release.
Packaging - ***1/2
I like the tall skinny boxes, and the exterior has appropriate Lannister details etched on the surface. It's all collector friendly of course,
although there is one piece of tape holding in the Hand of the Queen pin. There's no instructions, which I found a bit annoying thanks to said pin.
Sculpting - ****
I really liked the original Tyrion, but it's been several years...and the character has aged as well. This Season 7 portrait is spot on, in
likeness, realism, and expression.
They nailed the key component - the hooded eyes. But the nose, shape of the face, and added scars are excellent as well. Pop this head off the body, and anyone would recognize him immediately.
The hair is nicely stranded too, and when you're working with a full, long hair sculpt like this it can be a bit like a helmet. There's a little of that, but for the most part they avoid it by layering all the curls, particularly in front.
The full beard could use a smidge more cut to the defined hairs, but it's still extremely nice work, some of ThreeZero's best.
The hands are less rough looking this time, but still have the thick, short fingers you'd expect. The figure stands about 8 3/4" tall, fitting in quite nicely with the rest of the series.
Paint - ****
I'm going to say this is definitely the finest living human paint job we've seen from ThreeZero, although to be fair, they've improved steadily over
the last several releases. I zoomed in on a photo so you can see the detail I'll discuss.
The skin tone isn't flat, or completely even. In hand, it's harder to see, but it is actually freckled in a very, very realistic way. These freckles of varying sizes add a ton of realism, and it's these small details that set apart terrific paint jobs.
The scars look good too, with a pinkish hue that blends nicely. The hair and beard are decent, although as with the sculpt, the beard is the one spot that could use a bit more work.
My one complaint on the recent Brienne was with the sculpted eyes. They were too flat on the face, and the flat paint job didn't add much life to them. That is not the case here, where the eyes are set back realistically in the sockets, and have a nice gloss finish that creates natural catch lights.
If ThreeZero can pull off paint work like this every time, and manage to keep their price point below $200, they'll be killer on the market.
Articulation - ***1/2
While his short statue won't really lend itself to a extreme ninja poses, you will be able to get a lot of very natural, fluid stances that fit the
character.
The neck has a ball joint at the jawline and torso, and you can get plenty of bend and tilt to create personality. The shoulders, elbows, and wrists work great, but of course the tight fitting tunic does tend to limit them a bit, as it does with the torso and waist. I couldn't get the bend and lean out of the torso that I really wanted, but it was the only area where I had an issue.
The hips, knees, and ankles are great, allowing for short to deep stances all with the feet flat on the ground. The hands swap cleanly as well.
Accessories - ***1/2
There's not a ton with the standard release, but the deluxe adds quite a bit.
He has three additional sets of hands to go with the pair of relaxed hands he comes wearing. There's a set of closed fists, a set of wide grips, and a set designed to work nicely with the pitcher and goblet. There's a couple extra wrists pegs too, just in case.
The goblet and pitcher are silver plastic, and have a nice sculpt and paint job. The top of the pitcher flips open as well.
The Hand of the Queen pin comes as a separate piece, which you can attach to the tunic with a magnet. I took some shots with and without it, so you can decide.
That's it for the standard figure. However, the deluxe adds in 9 map markers, with sculpted designs to match the various houses. These look terrific and are well worth the extra $20 or so.
Outfit - ***1/2
The outfit consists of the tunic, the shirt with long sleeves, the pants, the belt, and the boots.
The overall quality of the materials and construction is great, and the tailoring is excellent. The sleeves of the shirt are made from the same material as the tunic, while the shirt itself underneath is a softer cloth.
The two piece boot sculpt is a little soft, but the design does allow for plenty of ankle movement.
The pin is held to the fabric thanks to a magnet! Took a bit of fooling around to get it to work, but I'm glad I waited on trying to pierce the fabric!
Fun Factor - ***1/2
We're at almost a dozen figures in this series now - it would be a dozen if I could afford the beautiful Drogon - and the majority of the recent
releases have been extremely nice. Add this guy in with the rest, and I bet you find yourself posing and re-posing all the time.
Value - ***1/2
Both the regular and deluxe are under $200, a very good value on today's market. Too many figures are hitting $250, and not really providing
the value for that price tag. If ThreeZero can maintain this sort of quality and stay under $200, they will do fantastic in the market. How about
some Witcher figures?
Things to Watch Out For -
The pin really does hold on the fabric via the magnet, but it may take some effort to locate it. You'll also want to take care when handling him,
lest it fall off and get lost.
Overall - ****
This line has had some bumps in the road, but the majority of the last several releases have been excellent, with this Tyrion topping the first in
overall quality and sculpt. The paint work has really picked up as well, and I'm hoping we see more of this with the upcoming Bran and
Joffery. I'm also really, really hoping we see some more announcements shortly!
