WOS Mobile Home Playset

The World of Springfield keeps on growing this month with the first of TWO exclusive playsets that will hit stores.

First up is the Mobile Home playset, an exclusive to Toys R Us.  The set is actually part of the 'celebrity' series, and is based on the episode where Homer becomes the manager for the singer Lurleen Lumpkin (voiced by Beverly D'Angelo).  The playset is a small section of the trailer, with two figures - Lurleen of course, and Colonel Homer.

The set retails for $29.99, but they haven't hit stores yet.  Amazon.com took pre-orders for these (and they are taking pre-orders for the Jacques/Marge exclusive for later this summer as well), and have beat the stores.  If you don't mind paying shipping, it looks like ordering these on-line will be the way to go.

BTW, the second playset will be the High School Prom set from Electronics Boutique.  They should start shipping the pre-orders from the on-line store any minute, and the stores should have them on the shelf by next week.

Packaging - **1/2
Same stuff, different day.  Although this is considered part of the 'celebrity' series, it does not sport the new All Star Voices packaging.

Sculpting - ***1/2
Homer's head sculpt is no surprise, since we've seen it several times before.  But the sculpt on his body is terrific, and the suit looks great.

Lurleen's head sculpt is also quite good, although she suffers a bit from the zombie look.  Without having much facial expression, and just the bug eyes, she has that blank stare.  But it certainly looks like the source material.

The sculpting on the playset is great as well.  From the little pillows to the curtains to the lamp, everything looks just as you'd expect it.

There's one big negative to the sculpting on both figures though, and that's why I deducted a star.  Both are posed in permanent positions, making what little articulation they have pretty useless.  There really is only one pose they look right in, and that's the price you pay for only having four points of articulation.

Paint - ***1/2
The paint ops here are excellent, particularly on Homer's suit.  There's more detail here on the figures than usual for this line, and the do a fine job with it.  Paint ops with WOS tends to be hit or miss though, so you should look at yours carefully when buying to be sure there aren't paint flecks on the face and any other issues.

Articulation - **
There is no surprises here - neck, shoulders and waist.  Even that limited articulation is pretty worthless though due to the pre-posed arms.

Talking Feature - **1/2
The lines used from the episode are all great.  If you're looking for all of them, check out Simpsons Collector Sector for a complete list.

But I had the same issues again with this set that so many folks have been complaining about recently - the feet/chips don't fit well on the pegs.  I had an extremely hard time getting Homer to stand on the peg, and Lurleen has some issues saying the lines although she's hooked up.  That's an area of QA that Playmates needs to concentrate on.

Accessories - **1/2
There are only two accessories with this set.  Homer has his cowboy hat, and Lurleen has her guitar.  Although there's no re-use, that's awful light on accessories.

Value - **1/2
This set isn't a great value - you won't find it cheaper than thirty bucks since it's an exclusive, and that's pretty high for a playset this small.  You're paying a premium because this is an exclusive, and because the WOS line is so hot.

Overall - ***
This playset isn't going to break into my top five favorites, but it still has a lot of merit. I am happy to have gotten the Lurleen figure (I don't recall her butt looking that good on the show), and Homer's suit looks fantastic.  But with only two accessories, and an extremely small base, it isn't as nice as something like the Android's Dungeon or Kwik-E-Mart.

Of course, if you're a WOS completist like me, you have to have one no matter what!

Where to Buy
Toys R Us stores should start getting these on the shelves pretty soon, but if you can't wait:

- Amazon.com is where I bought mine, $29.99 plus shipping.  They listed as out of stock when I just checked, but they were back in earlier this week, so you should check now and then.  And on top of it, you should order your Jacques/Marge set now, rather than waiting til the last minute.
