Packaging - *** These are in the usual boxes, with a
sturdy inner plastic coffin. There's no twisties or bands, and it's
very collector friendly, but there is plastic wrap around key spots to
avoid paint rubs.
Sculpting - ***1/2 I have to admit that at first glance, I
was a bit confused by the pose. Did her supercat Streaky
surprise her? Did she step on the cat? Trip over it, mid-air? Clearly
they are both flying...but I can't quite figure out what's happening
here. After awhile though, it really started to grow on me. I
think it's the old school pin-up nature of the pose, something you
might have seen from Vargas. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but
it's still pretty damn hot. Of course, the face sculpt reflects
the anime/manga nature of the series. There's also a bit of an elven
look to her, although I'm not quite sure why...it's not like she has
pointed ears. The detail work fits in nicely with the overall
series, with just the right amount of wrinkles and creases. The hair is
finely cut, and has a cool translucent color. The large S on her
chest is sculpted as well, not just painted, which is a huge plus. Her
cat has the lightning bolts sculpted on both sides, although
the fur is not very textured. It's
worth pointing out that both Supergirl and her kitty are attached to
the base by you, so if a cat in a cape ain't your thing, you can feel
free to leave him off.
Paint - **** The paint
work is well above average, as you'd expect with a collectible series
such as this. Colors are very bright, especially the red and blue, and
everything is consistent and clean. There's a slight translucence
to the skin, which gives it an interesting depth. I also really like
the clear color used with the hair, and the fluffy white cloud rests on
a clear base that keeps it all very sturdy.
Value - *** Considering that many statues in this scale -
and smaller - are now in the $80 -$90 range, the fact that these are
still affordable is much appreciated. With a little effort you should
be able to grab her at the onset at around $50 or so, but with the
popularity of the line, that is likely to rise with time.
Things to Watch Out For - Not
a thing. Although this is a plastic statue, not resin, you can still
break it with enough force, but you'd really have to work at it.
Overall - ***1/2
This is a series that continues to impress, although I can see where
the anime style and uber-sexy nature of the poses might be a deterrent
for some. The
pose may also be a bit odd, but I really do think they were going for a
pin-up style look, and in that light it really works well. The
paint work is excellent though, and the pose and style really grew on
me. As a big DC fan, I'm really enjoying this take on the lovely
ladies, and as a fan of the 40's and 50's pin-up girls, I appreciate
the style even more.
