Gentle Giant Harry Potter series 1 Busts
Harry Potter and Sirius Black

We've got a new guest reviewer tonight - lilwingman!  He checks in with a great review of the first two Gentle Giant busts in their Harry Potter series, Harry and Sirius.  Take it away, lwm!

Hello, Curtis here. Right off the bat I'd like to thank Mike for giving me the opportunity to do this review. So thanks :). Alright, now that that's out of the way, here we go.

With the recent release of the Hungarian Horntail statue, and the Dobby and Dementor mini-busts, I think it is time to go back and see where the line began. Gentle Giant has been making high-end collectibles for years now, and towards the end of last year the first two regular edition mini-busts of their Harry Potter line were released, Sirius Black (edition size of 1500) and Harry Potter (edition size of 2000). As you already know, the latest releases are top-notch (Dobby/Dementor). Can Harry and Sirius match up?

Packaging - ***
These two mini-busts come in very sturdy, and very black, box packaging. They feature a small window so you can see what you are getting, and do their job making sure that the item arrives safe and sound. They have a small picture of the character from the movie, though if you have seen the Dementor's box, I personally would have preferred some art similar to that, instead of just the black. But oh well, it is what's inside that really counts. Like the latest releases, these come with the small COA's. One thing to note is that Harry's hand holding the wand comes as a separate piece, to avoid breakage during shipping.

Sculpting - Sirius ***1/2; Harry ***
Let's start with Sirius. First and foremost, I think this is a phenomenal sculpt. The sign he is holding is done very well, with a lot of small details, and the same can be said for the shirt. One of the most outstanding features is the hair. I think it is brilliant how the hair is sculpted over the face, and when I first saw this bust I found that one of the most appealing aspects. This is definitely Gary Oldman, and had I not seen the likes of the Dumbledore bust (probably the best human likeness I've seen) this would have gotten a **** mark.

Right off the bat, let me say that I like this sculpt, and the issues I have are mostly with paint. The hair is well done, the wand handle has a large amount of detail to it considering it's size, and I am especially fond of the uniform. The collared shirt, tie, and robe look great. However, two sculpt issues I DO have are Harry's scar and glasses. The scar looks way too low from head on, considering how high Harry's forehead appears to go. Secondly, again I'm being biased because of the Dumbledore bust, but Harry's glasses are just way too bulky-looking.

These busts feature the rocky base, which is well sculpted here and continues to look great.

Paint - Sirius ***1/2; Harry ***
I have no real problems with Sirius' paint job. The vivid blue eyes contrast well with the rest of the 'dull' colors. He basically looks great. The only thing that baffled me was the different symbols on the sign he is holding. Though I don't wanna test it, they appear to be stickers. Considering the price, I expected them to be painted, and my stickers are fairly noticeable, so this small detail bothers me quite a bit.

Harry has a lot of great paint work. The uniform again looks fantastic. The skin could have used a little more of something, I'm not sure what, but it looks a little too smooth. Almost cartoony. Oh Harry, why did you have to have so much slop around your hairline though? And why are your glasses painted so poorly? I think a non-metallic silver would have saved the glasses from looking as awkward. The biggest thing for me with this bust though, and I hope this did not happen to anyone else, is that they forgot to paint his fingernails on one of his hands. They're just white, and it looks really off. Another small issue I had with this guy was the color of his base. For the most part all of the busts have the same grayish rock base, but Harry's is much much darker. Again, I'm not sure if this was only on mine, or throughout the whole run.

Design/Quality - Sirius ***1/2; Harry ****
Sirius pose looks great. This is definitely how he is known from the movies. My single issue with this look is that the mouth just looks a little too open. So much that it ends up looking awkward.

Finally poor Harry has seen some light. "Wand at the ready." This is a great action pose, which is fitting because Harry is the save-the-day guy. He has a very stern expression, and coupled with the rest of the body, it works well.

Value - **1/2
This is a hard area to judge. These busts are the first two released, and retailed for $50. At release time they could have been found even cheaper, but the demand for these items is growing, and the price reflects that. Currently Sirius and Harry fetch around $60 and $90, respectively.

Overall - Sirius ***1/2; Harry ***
Sirius is a solid sculpt, with a solid paint job. Harry does not fair as well, but glasses aside, he still looks great, and if you are into this line, he is a must. I wouldn't rank these up on the podium with the later releases, but for the first entries into the license, they look great. If you are thinking about starting a collection of these, don't wait much longer. Like I said, demand is growing, and with these two being the first released, they are going to be hard to come by in the future.
