Introduction

I've been reviewing a number of the Bishoujo statues from Kotobukiya, including the sexy Supergirl released a couple months ago. So far, the theme has been hot good girls, but with the introduction of the evil version of Supergirl, we get some bad mixed in with the sexy. And when I say 'bad', I mean oh so good.

This statue mixes the anime styling of the series with the outfit and design concept from Supergirl #5. This is the same sculpt as the previous release, just with an updated paint job.

While I called this an SDCC exclusive in some spots of the review, technically it's not. Kotobukiya does have an exclusive in this series for the show (Invisible Woman), but this Supergirl will be available after as well. They will have the first 360 at SDCC, with the balance of the 1500 edition size sold after. She'll cost $60, the same as the suggested retail on the regular releases.

Packaging - ***
The package is pretty much the same as the earlier release, but it does have the 'limited edition' sticker up top. There's no edition size on the box though, no edition number, and no Certificate of Authenticity. No photos of the black and silver outfit either. Good thing it's a window box, so you can see the actual statue while it's still in the package.

Sculpting - ***1/2
Since this is the same sculpt as the previous version, it should be no surprise that it gets the same score.

Supergirl is floating in the clouds, and Streaky her Supercat is along for the trip. You have to assemble both characters to the cloud base, and I've included a shot without Streaky. Last time several readers asked if that was possible, and while that leaves a hole in the cloud, you might prefer it kitty-less.

While the obvious style influence here is Japanese anime/manga, there's also a lot of the 1950's Vargas pinup style in both the pose and clothing.

The Streaky matches the previous version of course, at least in this category. He attaches to the cloud tightly, and I think adds a lot to the design.

These are done in a 1/7 scale, slightly larger than the Batman Black and White series, but a good medium size for a statue line.

I'm still not sure what Supergirl is doing up there in that cloud, but it sure looks like fun. The cloud itself is screwed on top of a clear plastic base, which is very strong and stable.

Paint - ***1/2
If you already own the previous Supergirl, then the big selling point here is the unique paint job.

The black and silver costume looks great, and that's not easy to do with this color combination. Silver is always a tricky color to work with, and it can be difficult to get the edges clean and the coverage consistent. They've done an excellent job, and the cut lines are very sharp.

The eyes and lips are very clean as well, and the dark lipstick works great with the outfit colors.

My favorite aspect of the paint job is actually something they did with the previous version as well - the ends of the hair are translucent, which captures the light beautifully.

Streaky's paint work matches Supergirl in terms of the color scheme, and has great work on the eyes and nose as well.

My only real complaint is a couple spots of dirt that lodged in the paint, particularly in the blond hair.

Value - **1/2
I'm calling this an average value, not quite as good as the normal releases. The normal versions have an SRP of $60, same as this statue, but you can usually find them for $50 or even less, making them an excellent value compared to other statues in this scale. However, this one is going to be tougher to find that cheap, at least for awhile, making her a bit more average in this category.

Things to Watch Out For -
No problems here - the two pieces attach to the base quite easily, and the plastic is far less likely to break.

Overall - ***1/2
Much like the Ami-Comi statues, or the Cover Girls of the DCU, single statues in the Bishoujo line look nice - but they look even better in a group. The consistent style and scale make for a terrific display of your favorite DC heroines.

With a limited run, this cool evil twin of Supergirl adds a unique perspective to the shelf, and is one that you'll get to explain to visitors. The fact that you can go with or without Streaky is also a plus, since some folks may not be all that for the cat.
