NECA Nightmare Before Christmas
Sally and the Mayor

Coheteboy has returned with the second half of his Nightmare Before Christmas reviews, focusing on The Mayor and Sally this time.  Tell us all about them, CB!

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a holiday favorite of mine, and when I found out that film accurate action figures were being produced, I was excited yet worried at the same time. Worried that corners would be cut all over the place and I'd be forced to buy a shoddy product. Those fears are now completely gone, as NECA delivered the goods. They "saved Christmas", so to speak.

Last time, I reviewed Jack Skellington and the Vampire, and Michael reviewed the entire line. Today I'll take a look at the rest of the series: Sally and the two-faced Mayor.

Packaging - ***1/2
NECA has followed the example of their competitors and encased their releases in the sturdy clamshell cases. Which means that you'll need some scissors before you tackle the many twist-ties that accompany each accessory. On the front of each clamshell is a sticker with the character name and a list of all included accessories. The blister card enclosed is refreshing because they're unique to the character, though they share the same general design elements. The packaging is very low-key but it actually looks rather nice that way.

Sculpting - ****
Wow. Just wow. I couldn't have asked for better sculpts for either of these figures. The detail in both are extraordinary. Sally's dress is intricately designed with textures that match the appearance of the film. The Mayor actually impresses me more out of the two, as the expression(s) and sculpt is absolutely dead-on... right down to his stubby feet. It's rather refreshing that NECA didn't take the easy way out and sculpt larger feet for these characters. They stayed true to the design of the characters and that is very impressive.

Paint - ****
Both paint applications on The Mayor and Sally are terrific. Sally's dress is nicely detailed with color and lines, and her stitches are all painstakingly applied.

The Mayor is also hard to beat, with every color looking true to film. I really can't say any more, because everything is exactly how it should be. Clean and accurate.

Articulation - ***1/2
Sally has a pretty good amount of articulation with approximately 18 points. Some are hindered from the dress, but they're still there anyway and that's all that really matters. Sally has ball jointed neck, ball jointed shoulders, ball jointed hips, and articulation in the upper arms, elbows, wrists, and knees.

The Mayor isn't as strong but pretty darn close with about 16 points of articulation. Mayor has ball jointed neck (with a great deal of range), ball joined shoulders, and articulated upper arms, elbows, wrists, waist, legs, and feet.I really don't think you can ask for even more articulation on the Mayor. I'm suprised they loaded him up as much as they did! My only one complaint is with the articulation in the arms. They tend to pop out quite easily when you try to move the elbows around. That's the one complaint I had.

Accessories - Sally ****; The Mayor *** 1/2
Following in the Palisades tradition of giving just about everything, the accessories packed in with the figures are great toys in their own right. Sally comes with a black cat seen in the film as well as a stand, basket, bottles, dead fish, jar of deadly night shade, spoon, and jack-in-the-box Christmas present. The cat even has articulation in the neck.

The Mayor doesn't come with as many items but he certainly comes with enough! Along with the stand, Mayor comes with megaphone, ink well, book, Halloween plans (which are blank rolls of paper), and Decoy Duck Christmas present. Oh and of course the removable hat.

Fun Factor - ****
If you love the film as I do, these fantastically sculpted figures with great articulation and accessories will sure to please.

Value - ***1/2
I myself paid close to $10 each for these figures from a private dealer, but even for $11.99-12.99 retail really isn't bad at all. These figures are all rather large so don't let the price point hold you back. You won't regret it!

Overall - ****
As I said in the previous review, these are my favorite new toy line of the year. Everything about these toys are absolutely perfect. From scale to sculpt, paint to articulation, these figures are the things to get this holiday season.

SCORE RECAP:

Where to Buy -
I found the entire set at a private retailer for close to $40, but you should be able to find these at retailers such as Hot Topic for about $11-12.99 or Suncoast and Tower... or wherever you've seen NECA toys sold. Online options include:

- CornerStoreComics has the set for $44, or each figure for $12. They also have some of the re-issued original figures.

- Killer Toys has the set of four for $48.95.
