Justice League Unlimited
Batman and Wonder Pig

Wonder Pig Justice League Unlimited Batman action figures

Fans of the Justice League Unlimited cartoon may recall one particular episode, called "This Little Piggy". In this episode, Wonder Woman is transformed into a pig by Circe, and Batman works to get the situation reversed. Silly as it sounds, it was a key episode in the flirtatious relationship between Batman and Wonder Woman, making it clear that Batman cared more for Wonder Woman than he did, say, Superman. C'mon, can you blame him?

Mattel's latest release of Justice League Unlimited figures includes a Wonder Woman, a Supes, a Bizarro, a Sinestro, and...Batman with the Wonder Pig. Yes, it's a rather unusual release, but one I'm betting fans will be grabbing.

I picked this guy up at Target, and they are only five bucks these days.  When was the last time you bought a five dollar action figure? Of course, there might be a reason for that price...

I'm going to grade this set in an odd way. Normally I'd treat Batman as the figure, and the pig as an accessory. But since the pig is such a key aspect to buying this Batman, I'm going to count her as her own figure, sort of like a two pack.

Packaging - ***
I like the colors and graphics used with the entire DCU line. While these oddly shaped bubbles will be a bit of a pain for the MOCers to store, I like the small size and reduced use of materials. They also hold up pretty well to shelf wear.

On the back you'll see photos of the rest of this wave too, which is always an appreciated feature for the kid or collector trying to keep up with the releases.

Sculpting - **1/2

I like the general aspects of both sculpts, but in the actual execution of the manufactured versions, there's some issues.

You've seen this Batman before, smirk and all.  Yes, it's a very accurate maquette style sculpt to the show, and I like the sharp cut lines of the design. But there are plenty of obvious mold lines, as well as a couple weird areas on the belt that look like damage from the mold as well.

He also breaks one of my cardinal rules - he has a very, very hard time standing on his own.  That's been true of many of the JL figures, due to the skinny ankles, small feet, and large upper bodies.  But if you plan on keeping this one on a shelf, you'll probably want to either pick up the new JLU stands at Matty Collector, or use the McFarlane Spawn stands.

The pig is definitely cute, and matches up with the show well enough. She is a solid piece though, with tons of mold marks and lines all around. I'm also not real keen on the sculpted pose, with one leg slightly up in the air, since it makes balancing an already tipsy animal that much more difficult. This odd leg might be caused by the plastic tray though, and you can probably reform it with a quick hot water/ cold water bath.

Paint - Batman **; Pig *1/2
Neither figure sports an outstanding paint job, or even one that could rival the average mass market toy.

Batman is done in his basic blue and gray, and there's slop around most of the cut lines, especially the belt, boot tops and trunk lines. Quality was clearly not at the top of their list when cranking these out.

The pig is a nice pink with black eyes and hooves, and silver 'cuffs' on her front legs. Again, there's some real slop here, with the silver being inconsistent in coverage, stray brown marks on the face and body, and irregularly dotted eyes. This little piggy is very similar to something you'd get out of one of those 50 cent prize machines at the front of your local grocery store.

Articulation - Batman **; Pig Bupkis
If you've been a regular buyer of JLU figures, you know the drill - cut neck, cut shoulders, T hips. It's not much, but you can get him to stand if you put in some effort.

The Wonder Pig is a solid PVC figure, no articulation.  A cut neck would have been nice, but might be too much to ask for at five bucks.

Accessories - Bupkis
Since I'm counting the pig as a separate figure and not an accessory, there's nothing else here.  Now you're beginning to understand that low price.

Fun Factor - ***
Kids who are fans of the show will get a laugh out of the Wonder Pig, and if they don't already have five of these Batmen, they can use him as well.  But the average kid isn't going to care a whole lot about a farm animal with silver front legs.

Value - ***
At five bucks, you'd think I'd go the full four stars, but let's remember that this Batman has seen your shelf many times by now. Sure, I'm glad they are only five bucks, but I'm really spending that on a little PVC pig.

Remember, you can buy repaints of the earlier animated Bat figures right now at Big Lots for about three bucks. They don't have any accessories, so the Wonder Pig is a bonus, and for the extra couple bucks she's worth it.

Things to Watch Out For -
You should have a few to choose from on the peg when you find them (there's several in a case), so watch for the best paint you can find. Otherwise, you're good to go.

Overall - **1/2
Let's face it - you're buying this set for the pig.  And I think that's a fine reason to pick it up, especially at the relatively cheap $5 price tag.  Just be aware that there are plenty of reasons behind that low price tag, and that what you're getting here is on the low side of mass market quality.

Where to Buy -
I snagged this pair at Target, which seems to be your best mass market bet.

Your other choice is to search ebay, and you can do that using the sponsor MyAuctionLinks.
